Brian Kersten

Brian Kersten, DVM, is a distinguished veterinarian whose lifelong dedication to animal care and community service has made a significant impact. Born and raised on a farm in Appleton, Wisconsin, he developed a deep connection with animals at a young age. This early exposure to animals ignited a passion for veterinary medicine, setting him on a path to make a difference in the lives of animals and people.

Pursuing his passion, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Minnesota. Excelling in his studies, he graduated with high distinction in 1977. His unwavering commitment to veterinary medicine led him to further his education and skills, culminating in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1983.

Brian began his veterinary career in a mixed animal practice in Burlington, Wisconsin, where he gained valuable experience and knowledge. His commitment to animal welfare and community service was evident early on, as he dedicated himself to providing exceptional care to all animals under his supervision.

In 1985, his journey took a significant turn when he decided to serve in relief and development in Haiti for 2.5 years. This experience was transformative, as he worked tirelessly to assist the rural poor and their animals. His dedication during this time showcased his compassionate nature and willingness to go above and beyond to make a difference.

Returning to the United States in 1987, he joined a mixed animal practice in Baldwin, Wisconsin. His leadership and expertise in veterinary medicine flourished, and he eventually purchased the course in 2001. His commitment to animal welfare extended to his community service, as he served as the President of the Pierce St. Croix Humane Society from 2001 to 2003.

In 2016, after a fulfilling career, Brian sold his practice, but his passion for animal care remained strong. He founded Mercy Veterinary Service in Baldwin, a low-cost clinic that provides quality veterinary care to pets, regardless of their owners’ financial constraints. He also serves as a relief veterinarian in Amery, Wisconsin, further contributing to animal welfare in the community.
